‘We Spend 3/4 of Our Income on Rent’: How Corporate Greed Is Crushing Colorado Families – Ana

My name is Ana and I am the mother to four children and grandmother to eight grandchildren. I am from Mexico City but have lived in Colorado for 33 years. For the past five years I’ve lived in a mobile home park.

We spend three-quarters of our monthly income on rent. With all our expenses, we can’t save any money, which makes our future feel uncertain. We’ve had to look for extra jobs just to cover our basic needs, and that’s taken a real toll on us. We’re spending more time away from our family, and the physical strain is hard on our bodies — especially as we get older. Working so much without proper rest has made us sick at times.

Prices keep going up, but our wages remain low. We don’t have the opportunity to buy a home, which leaves us vulnerable to investors who only want to make a profit. They don't care that people are left homeless or that families are being displaced because they have nowhere to go.

That’s why I believe housing policies like rent stabilization are so important. They can give families like mine the chance to breathe, plan for the future, and live with dignity. Everyone deserves the security of a stable home, not just those who can afford to own one.

Your support powers our movement.

When we unite, we can rewrite laws to protect all of our families, keep a roof over our heads, and create communities where rent is reasonable and housing options are plentiful.
